Profile :: Drew Hurn

For the longest time I would sit in from of my father, watching and listening to him play and sing these songs that I would in the next 30 years of my life learn to love and enjoy playing myself, but at the time I didn't know how to care for them. Growing up I had no desire to play music only to play sports and play with GI Joes. When I turned a bit older my father asked me if I was interested in learning how to play the guitar. I thought he was crazy. Why would I do a foolish thing like that? It would've cut into baseball, golf and whatever else I could find the time to do at such a young age. So, I turned to music that I could listen too on a simplistic level, no appreciation at all for musicianship. When I turned 14, he decided to put the question out there for another go around. Now this was a bold move on his part because through the past couple years he had to grind his teeth and fill his ears with tissues while listening to me play, and murder, numerous instruments for school activities. My musical talents did not show through during these moments and I figured he had given up on pursing a musical career for me. A baseball mitt, bat and ball were all I thought I needed. Of course, I decided to take him up on his offer. I took my first lesson from a fellow named Matt Brooks, and I have never looked back. Matt was and is a genius. He taught me the basics, but only the stuff that kept me interested. The amount of beauty, suffering, anguish and serenity that can come from a guitar was absolutely dumbfounding me daily.
I didn't find my true calling in the music industry until I found my passion to sing many years later. Blessed with the internet, I came across a woman named Cindy Shadrick. She guided me to frame and form my singing to what it is today. We have shared the stage together and she still teaches me and constructively critiques me to become better.
I have played in numerous bands starting with Diving for Ibis in high school, Towncrier in my early 20's, Barefoot Compadres for a few gigs, Twofold (with a beautifully talented singer by the name of Erica Drown), a brief stint with the unknown band The Knews, years of solo gigging, and am currently rhythm guitarist and lead vocalist with The Bamboozlers.
Music is me, it's my passion and will always be the driving force which pushes me to excel outside of the box.
